Good dental hygiene helps prevent tooth decay, but there are numerous other reasons why it is important. Maintaining a good oral hygiene regime will help reduce your risk of gum disease as this can be far more destructive than tooth decay.

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that is incredibly common. It is often due to inadequate dental hygiene allowing bacteria to build up on the teeth and gums where they can cause inflammation. This inflammatory response can destroy gum tissue, the ligaments securing teeth in their sockets and even the bone surrounding your teeth. Advanced gum disease, or periodontitis is the most common cause of tooth loss and yet it is entirely preventable with good oral hygiene.

There’s another reason why you should practice good oral hygiene as it will help protect your general health. Poor dental health, in particular gum disease can affect your overall health, increasing your risk of certain diseases or worsening any conditions already present.
