August marks Dental Health Week. This year it is all about women’s dental health and how it is affected by changing hormonal levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and the menopause. Here at Integrated Dental Care we do try to take extra care of women patients during life changes and we may suggest seeing women patients more frequently for check-ups and cleanings to avoid any problems developing.

However, we also feel that Dental Health Week is a good time for everyone to think about improving their dental care. Great dental care can help your natural teeth last for life and just as importantly it can protect your general health. It isn’t difficult to find just a few minutes each day to brush and floss thoroughly which is all that is needed to maintain great oral health. If you feel you’d like to improve your brushing and flossing routine then our friendly dental team are always delighted to help so please just ask.

Just like natural teeth, the gum and bone around your dental implants can become infected with a condition very similar to gum disease so it is vital to take care of them. This isn’t difficult to do.

You can care for your dental implants in much the same way as you care for your natural teeth. It’s important to make sure you brush and floss them regularly to keep them free from plaque and food debris. We can also give you information and practical demonstrations using other tools such as interdental brushes and soft picks, which can be great for getting into any hard-to-reach areas.

Don’t forget to book regular check-ups and cleanings with us here at Integrated Dental Care to keep your dental implants in great condition. With the proper care, you should be able to enjoy your dental implants for many years to come.

It has never been easier to have a perfectly straight smile, and here at Integrated Dental Care we have a great range of braces to treat all sorts of orthodontic problems. No longer just for children, we can straighten your teeth no matter your age. As well as cosmetically improving your smile, straighter teeth can be healthier teeth. They are easier to keep clean so you are less likely to develop gum disease or tooth decay. Teeth that bite together correctly will wear down evenly and are less likely to chip and fracture.

Orthodontics could be a great investment in your smile and in your dental health. Why not contact us to find out how treatment could help you?

Wisdom teeth are renowned for causing problems as they frequently try to erupt into a mouth that is too small or overcrowded to comfortably accommodate them. However, this is not always the case which is why we prefer to take a ‘wait and see’ approach. If your wisdom teeth have not yet erupted, then we will keep a close eye on their development through regular examinations and digital dental x-rays.

Problematic wisdom teeth can push through sideways or will try to erupt underneath adjacent teeth, potentially damaging them and causing pain.  Wisdom teeth that only partially erupt could cause infection and decay. If we can see there is no hope of your wisdom teeth erupting normally, we will suggest you have them removed. We have extensive experience in removing wisdom teeth here at Integrated Dental Care, but if their extraction is particularly complex then we might refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. This will be someone we know and trust to take good care of you.

Ideally, you should brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time, but it is very easy to over-estimate the time spent cleaning your teeth. If you use an electric toothbrush then it will have a built-in timer, but if you prefer a manual toothbrush then we recommend keeping a small timer in your bathroom.

It can help to imagine your mouth being split into four quarters or quadrants. Aim to spend around thirty seconds on each quadrant. Concentrate on methodically cleaning all your tooth surfaces before you move onto the next section in your mouth and don’t forget to floss!

If you would like a bit of help in improving your oral hygiene routine, please just ask our friendly dental team here at Integrated Dental Care.

These days there is a terrific variety of herbal teas available and this drink makes a tasty alternative to traditional tea. We have listed five reasons why you should drink herbal tea.

  1. Herbal tea can have a therapeutic effect. For example, ginger tea may help relieve nausea and peppermint tea can be clearing if you have a head cold.
  2. Herbal teas are made from nutritious plants and may release some vitamins and minerals when you add hot water.
  3. Many herbal teas can have a calming effect, helping you to wind down after a busy day. Lemon balm can help to quieten the mind and chamomile is well-known for its soothing properties.
  4. Other herbal teas help to boost energy and these include licorice root and ginseng tea.
  5. Herbal tea is a zero calorie drink that can help you feel full for longer which is great if you are trying to lose weight.

Our focus is very much on trying to prevent dental problems by using the best preventative dentistry treatments which include fissure sealants. These protect the chewing surfaces of your back teeth as these often have deep fissures that can easily trap food and bacteria, resulting in tooth decay.

Fissure sealants are quick to apply and are very non-invasive as you will not need local anaesthetic. They consist of a layer of thin, flowable plastic that completely seals the chewing surfaces, preventing infection and decay. Once the sealants are in place they are virtually invisible and they will not interfere with your bite. Fissure sealants will last for quite a few years before they need replacing, but we will keep an eye on their condition during your regular dental check-ups with Integrated Dental Care.

We can only use fissure sealants on teeth that do not have any cavities which is why we often suggest sealing children’s adult back teeth as soon as they come through.

Here at Integrated Dental Care, we encourage everyone to come and see us regularly, and most people need a dental check-up every six months. The nice thing about having a regular dental examination is that we can catch any small problems before they become bigger and trickier to fix and when treatment is likely to be quicker and less invasive. We can help your natural teeth stay stronger and healthier for longer which is definitely something to smile about! A healthy mouth also protects your general health.

If it is time for your dental check-up, then why not give us a call today?
