Crowns

One of the most versatile and widely used restorative dental treatments, a crown is placed to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth in its entirety.

Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.

Porcelain or ceramic crowns are used for front teeth as they can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys and acrylic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth, which need to withstand the extreme biting and chewing forces placed on them. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.

We may recommend a crown to:

  • Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
  • Replace a lost large filling when there isn’t enough tooth structure remaining for a filling to be an effective treatment
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Attach a bridge
  • Complete a dental implant
  • Restore a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment.

Receiving a dental will often involve two appointments with our team. The first is to prepare your tooth and make a detailed impression mould, and the second to place and secure your crown.
