Teeth Whitening

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during whitening treatment, particularly to cold temperatures. This is usually mild and resolves shortly after treatment is completed or paused. If you have sensitive teeth, we can adjust the gel concentration or recommend a desensitising toothpaste to use alongside your whitening treatment.

Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel - it won't change the colour of existing fillings, crowns, veneers, or bridges.

If you have visible dental work on your front teeth, we'll discuss this during your consultation. In some cases, you may choose to whiten your natural teeth first and then replace any mismatched dental work to achieve a uniform shade.

The first step for any dislodged tooth is to remain calm and find the actual tooth. It's important to be extremely careful when handling a loose tooth, so the roots and tissue fragments on the base remain intact. This ensures the nerves and blood vessels remain healthy so there is a chance the tissues will grow to support the tooth once again.

• Handle the tooth carefully by the crown (the white part), never by the root
• Gently rinse the tooth with milk or saline if it's dirty, don't scrub or remove any attached tissue
• If possible, try gently placing it back into its socket. If you cannot replant the tooth keep it moist by immersing it in milk or saliva, sealing it in plastic wrap, or placing it in the person's mouth next to the cheek.

Teeth that are reinserted within 20 minutes have the best chance of surviving. In some cases, the tooth will reattach, but if the inner mechanisms of the teeth are seriously damaged, root canal therapy might be necessary.

When used as directed under professional supervision, teeth whitening does not damage healthy tooth enamel. The whitening gel works by penetrating the enamel to break down stain molecules within the tooth structure, without eroding or weakening the enamel itself. Overuse or misuse of whitening products can cause sensitivity, which is why professional supervision is recommended.

A professional clean removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains from your teeth, which can make them look brighter and fresher. However, it doesn't change the underlying colour of your teeth. Whitening uses a bleaching agent to lighten the internal colour of the tooth enamel.

For the best results, we recommend having a professional clean before starting whitening treatment so the gel can work directly on clean tooth surfaces.
