One of the most common questions parents ask our Pakenham braces dentist team is when their child should first be assessed for orthodontic treatment.

As a general guide, we recommend an orthodontic assessment around age 7-8. At this age, a mix of baby and adult teeth are present, and early signs of developing alignment or bite issues can often be identified - even if treatment isn't needed right away.

In some cases, early orthodontic intervention between the ages of 7 and 10 can be beneficial. This doesn't always mean full braces - it might involve a palatal expander to widen a narrow jaw, a space maintainer to hold room for adult teeth, or a short course of partial braces to address a specific concern.

We'll monitor your child's development at regular check-ups and recommend the right time to begin treatment based on their individual growth pattern and dental development.

The teenage years are the most common time for orthodontic treatment, and for good reason - most adult teeth are in place, the jaw is still growing, and teeth tend to respond well to movement during this stage of development.

We understand that wearing braces as a teenager can feel like a big deal. Our Pakenham team takes the time to make sure every young patient understands their treatment, feels comfortable with the process, and knows how to care for their braces properly.

If your teenager is interested in a less visible option, Invisalign may be suitable depending on their case. We'll discuss all available options and help you and your teen choose the approach that works best.

It's never too late to straighten your teeth. An increasing number of adults are choosing orthodontic treatment - whether they missed out on braces as a teenager, had treatment that has relapsed over time, or have developed crowding or bite issues later in life.

Adult orthodontic treatment works on the same principles as treatment for younger patients, though there are a few differences to be aware of:

• Treatment may take slightly longer, as adult bone is denser and teeth can move a little more slowly
• Adults are more likely to have existing dental work such as fillings, crowns, or missing teeth that need to be factored into the treatment plan
• Gum health is particularly important - any gum disease needs to be managed before orthodontic treatment begins
• Adults often have strong preferences about aesthetics, which is why we offer Invisalign as less visible alternatives to metal braces
