Invisalign

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that straightens teeth using a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays. Each set of aligners is slightly different from the last, applying gentle, controlled pressure to gradually shift your teeth into their planned positions over the course of treatment.

The aligners are made from a smooth, BPA-free thermoplastic material. They fit closely over your teeth and are virtually invisible when worn - most people won't notice you're wearing them unless you point it out.

You wear each set of aligners for approximately one to two weeks before moving on to the next set in the series. Each new set continues the process of gradually moving your teeth according to the digital treatment plan created at the start of your journey.

Invisalign can be used to treat a wide range of orthodontic concerns, from mild crowding and spacing through to more complex bite issues - though suitability depends on your individual case.

Invisalign has evolved significantly since it was first introduced, and the system can now address many of the same orthodontic issues that were traditionally treated with fixed braces. Our Pakenham dentist may recommend Invisalign for:

• Crowded teeth - When there isn't enough space in the jaw for all your teeth to sit comfortably, causing them to overlap or twist
• Gaps between teeth (spacing) - Spaces between teeth that you'd like closed for a more uniform appearance
• Overbite - When the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth more than they should
• Underbite - When the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth
• Crossbite - When some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside, which can cause uneven wear and jaw problems
• Open bite - When the upper and lower front teeth don't meet when the mouth is closed
• Generally crooked or misaligned teeth - Teeth that are rotated, tilted, or out of position

Here's how the process works at our Pakenham dental clinic:

Step 1 - Consultation and Assessment
Our Invisalign dentist begins with a thorough examination of your teeth, bite, and overall oral health. We'll discuss your concerns, what you'd like to achieve, and whether Invisalign is likely to be a suitable option for your case. If there are any issues that need to be addressed first - such as decay or gum disease - we'll discuss this before starting orthodontic treatment.

Step 2 - Digital Scanning and Treatment Planning
If you're a suitable candidate, we take a digital scan of your teeth using a 3D intraoral scanner - no messy impressions required. This scan is used to create a detailed digital model of your teeth, which is then used to map out the planned movement of each tooth from its current position to its final position.
You'll be able to see a digital preview of how your teeth are expected to look at the end of treatment, giving you a clear picture of what Invisalign can achieve before you commit.

Step 3 - Your Custom Aligners Are Made
Once you're happy with the treatment plan, your custom aligners are manufactured using the digital data. You'll receive a series of aligner sets, each designed to move your teeth incrementally according to the plan.

Step 4 - Wearing Your Aligners
You wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush and floss your teeth. Each set of aligners is worn for approximately one to two weeks before you switch to the next set in the series.

Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip and guide specific movements. These are subtle, temporary, and removed at the end of treatment.

Step 5 - Progress Check-Ups
You'll visit our Pakenham dentist for regular check-ups throughout your treatment - typically every six to eight weeks. These appointments allow us to monitor your progress, check that everything is tracking as planned, and provide you with your next sets of aligners.

Step 6 - Retention
Once your teeth have reached their final positions, you'll wear retainers to keep them in place. Without retention, teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original positions over time. We'll discuss the most appropriate retention option for you - typically a removable retainer worn at night, a fixed retainer bonded behind the front teeth, or a combination of both.

Our Invisalign dentist Pakenham typically schedules progress check-ups every six to eight weeks throughout your treatment. These appointments are usually brief - we'll check that your teeth are tracking as planned, address any questions or concerns, and provide your next sets of aligners. If any adjustments are needed, we'll discuss them at these visits.

Invisalign has become increasingly capable of treating complex cases, but it does have limitations. Very severe crowding, significant skeletal discrepancies, or complex bite issues may be better addressed with traditional braces or a combination of treatments. We'll assess your individual case during your consultation and recommend the most appropriate option.

There's no upper age limit for Invisalign - as long as your teeth and gums are healthy, orthodontic treatment can be considered at any age.

For younger patients, Invisalign Teen is generally suitable once most of the adult teeth have erupted. We'll assess your suitability based on your dental health and orthodontic needs rather than your age.
